(Dr. Arthur Headington and Phyllis Leseth)

Dr. Arthur J. Headington, descendant of a pioneer Winneshiek Co. family, was born 7 Sep 1904 in Canoe Twp. He is the son of James Albert Headington (b. 5 Mar 1876-d. 28 Mar 1973) and Luana Gates (b. 20 Dec 1880-d. 1959). Arthur’s siblings were a sister Irene (b. 1901 -d. 1908) and brother Dale (b. 24 Dec 1914-d. Aug 1994).

According to family legend, Headington ancestors emigrated from England to America with Lord Baltimore’s shipload of settlers to colonize Maryland in 1634. However, the first actual record of a Headington residing in Baltimore Co. is dated 1703. By the time of the American Revolution at least 6 Headington families lived in Baltimore Co.

The family’s Iowa branch was founded by Nathan Headington, Arthur’s great-great-grandfather who moved west by a circuitous route and eventually settled in OH. In 1858 Nathan’s son James, Arthur’s great-grandfather, and wife Barbara, migrated to northeast Iowa where they occupied land a few miles north of Decorah. It is very likely that James’s brother Benjamin and family, along with the adult married children of their sister and husband the John Marlows, arrived in the Decorah area on the same wagon train.

Arthur’s grandfather, Jacob Headington, was born 24 Aug 1841 in OH. He was the fifth child of James and his first wife Mary Lepley. Jacob married Mary Jane Schaffer 23 Nov 1868. James Albert, Arthur’s father was the third of their 7 children. Jacob died 7 Feb 1922 and Mary Jane died 12 Dec 1915.

Arthur graduated from Decorah High School in 1923 and from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1927. Following graduation he was employed by Dr. Edward McMasters, a Decorah optometrist. Arthur became a partner in 1935 and sole owner of the practice in 1952.

On 25 Jun 1932 Arthur married lone Farber born 14 Jan 1901. They had 2 children: Shirley and Richard. Richard  married Mary Hulberg in 1964. They have 2 children: Michael and Eric.lone died 10 Oct 1972. Arthur m/2 Elayne Diestelmeier on 27 Jan 1974.

Arthur’s community interests include serving as assistant Scoutmaster during the 1950’s. For 50 years he was an avid golfer at Oneota Golf and Country Club. He has belonged to the Rotary International Club for over 51 years and is the senior member both in age and in length of membership.
